DigitizeXY (most commonly known as DigXY or DigiData) is a lightweight plot digitizer software utility designed to extract numerical (X,Y) coordinates from scanned graphs, charts, and images.
It was originally written in 1997 by Thunderhead Engineering. Researchers, engineers, and students frequently use it to recover original, raw data points when a scientific publication or book only provides a visual plot without its underlying data tables. Core Functionality
The software works by converting pixel locations on a graphic file back into real physical values:
Axis Calibration: You upload a graph image (PNG, JPG, BMP) and click on known points on the X and Y axes to establish the scale.
Data Point Selection: You manually click along the curve or data points in the image.
Data Export: The software translates those clicks into a matrix of exact numerical X and Y values, which you can copy and paste directly into spreadsheet programs like Microsoft Excel or OriginLab. Current Status
Discontinued: The original program is no longer supported or updated by Thunderhead Engineering.
Availability: It is provided completely free as a legacy download on the Thunderhead Engineering DigXY page.
Compatibility: It was built for older Windows environments (Windows XP, 7, and 8) and has not been optimized or fully tested for modern versions like Windows 10 or 11. Modern Alternatives
Because DigXY is a legacy tool, most users have transitioned to modern, platform-independent alternatives that include automation features like automatic line-tracing and color filtering:
