An inventor named John Reece created the first automatic eyelet and buttonhole machine in 1874. Before this, people had to sew every buttonhole by hand, which took a long time. His new machine was so amazing that it won top prizes at World’s Fairs.

The Reece 101: This is the most famous model. It is a heavy, tough machine made to sew keyhole buttonholes. These are the round-ended buttonholes you see on heavy clothing like jeans, winter coats, and suits.
The “Reece Stitch”: In 1908, the company made a machine that created a stitch so strong and neat that it became a global standard. For a long time, many countries officially required this exact stitch for military and police uniforms.
